Shrimp Cocktail with Sriracha Lime Cocktail Sauce

We had the privilege of ringing in the New Year with this absolutely delicious Shrimp Cocktail with homemade Sriracha Lime Cocktail Sauce. What a treat.

To celebrate 2014 with you, I’m hosting a Giveaway sponsored by Safeway and their Just For You program. All the details are later in the blog post. Don’t miss it.

This is the best cocktail sauce I’ve ever made or eaten. Hands down. There’s unexpected extra heat from the Sriracha and the surprising flavors of lime and cilantro. When you taste it, immediately you know it’s cocktail sauce, however it’s different, it’s special. It’s so good. In late spring, when its clamming season again, I’ll no doubt be making this sauce to accompany our annual Panko Fried Razor Clam feast.

Also, giving the shrimp a quick boil in well-seasoned water, then dropping them immediately into an ice bath produces tender, succulent shrimp with great flavor, opposed to the flavorless, rubbery shrimp you find in so many standard shrimp cocktails. All around, this is a celebration-worthy appetizer.

Safeway Just For U Program and Giveaway {Giveaway Now Closed}

For this post, I teamed up with Safeway and created this recipe with the help of Safeway’s Just For U program and smartphone app, in preparation for the exciting launch of the program at Carr’s/Safeway stores here in the state of Alaska this month. It was quick and easy for me to sign up for the Just For U program online and download the mobile app in the app store.

Here’s how the app looks on my phone:

Using the Just For U app, I was able to browse weekly deals in my area of Alaska and load coupons and personalized savings offers to my Safeway Club Card. I was also able to create a shopping list using the app, including all the ingredients I needed to make this Shrimp Cocktail with Sriracha Lime Cocktail Sauce, all on my iPhone while sitting on my couch. I didn’t have to buy a newspaper, clip coupons, or pick up an ad inside the store in order to take advantage of any savings offers. Awesome!

All the deals were automatically loaded to my Club Card, and with one swipe at checkout in our local Safeway store, all the savings were subtracted from my total. It was extremely easy and convenient.  Plus, the personalized savings offers and digital coupons through the Just For U program can help shoppers save up to 20% more than Club prices.

Shrimp Cocktail with Sriracha Lime Cocktail Sauce

Tender, succulent shrimp served with a spicy Sriracha Lime Cocktail Sauce.

Yields: Serves 8-10 (servings will depend on the size of your shrimp)

  • For the Shrimp:
  • 2 lbs jumbo raw shrimp, tail-on, deveined
  • 2 tablespoons Old Bay Seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • For the Sriracha Lime Cocktail Sauce:
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon horseradish
  • 1 teaspoon Sriracha
  • Juice of half a lime
  • 1 dash worcestershire sauce
  • 1 small clove garlic, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons cilantro

Place a large bowl of ice water in the sink.

Put a large pot of water over high heat and season the water with Old Bay, garlic powder, chili powder, and salt. When the water is boiling, add the shrimp. When the water returns to a boil, after about 3 minutes or so, the shrimp should be done - the shrimp will have turned from translucent/gray to pink and should be cooked through, but not rubbery. Be careful not to overcook. Immediately drain the shrimp and submerge into the ice water bath. Peel the shrimp, leaving the tails on.

!To Make the Sauce:

Add the ketchup, horseradish, Sriracha, lime, worcestershire, garlic, and cilantro to a food processor. Whirl until smooth and combined, about 30 seconds. Spoon the sauce into a serving dish.

Serve the shrimp promptly over ice with the Sriracha Lime Cocktail Sauce and lime wedges.
